ARCTIC LIVING I KIRKENES
Welcome to Kirkenes – The Arctic Gateway
Located at the northeastern tip of Norway, Kirkenes is one of Europe’s most unique Arctic destinations. This colorful town sits beautifully along the fjord and offers a fascinating combination of untouched wilderness, rich history, modern infrastructure, and authentic Northern Norwegian charm.
A Small Town with Big Opportunities
With fewer than 10,000 residents in the municipality and around 6,000 in the town itself, Kirkenes may be small in size, but it offers an impressive range of services and experiences. Visitors will find a wide selection of shops, restaurants, hotels, and private accommodation.
Despite its remote location, Kirkenes is easy to reach and comfortable to explore. The town has a modern airport with daily connections to Oslo, Tromsø and in summer also to Helsinki, as well as a hospital, cinema, cultural events, and excellent local services.
Most importantly, Kirkenes has retained its authentic character. Here, Arctic life is real, genuine, and close to nature.
Nature Right Outside Your Door
One of Kirkenes’ greatest advantages is the short distance between town and wilderness. Within just ten minutes, you can find yourself surrounded by breathtaking Arctic landscapes, forests, fjords, and wildlife.
Whether you prefer independent adventures or guided excursions, there are countless opportunities to experience the region’s unique nature throughout the year.
Discover Our History
Kirkenes has a remarkable history shaped by its location near the borders of Finland and Russia. Learn more by visiting the Borderland Museum or joining a guided tour of Andersgrotta, the famous bomb shelter used during World War II.
A Year-Round Destination
Kirkenes has welcomed visitors for more than 30 years. Tourism first grew through summer travel and the daily arrival of the Hurtigruten coastal ship. Over the last 15 years, Kirkenes has also become one of Norway’s most sought-after winter destinations.
Today, Kirkenes offers unforgettable experiences in every season.

An Arctic Hidden Gem
Kirkenes remains one of Northern Norway’s best-kept secrets. Since there are no direct international flights, all visitors travel via Oslo. While this requires an extra connection, it also means that Kirkenes is far less crowded than many other Arctic destinations.
Here, you can still experience genuine Northern Norwegian hospitality, authentic local culture, and nature without the crowds.
Kirkenes is a destination that surprises, inspires, and stays with you long after your journey ends.
